Portland Bus Trip

The Bates College class of 2012 have finally learned that a Senior Class trip to the Old Port will be on this following Tuesday!

The senior class presidents has reserved Club Oasis and will be coordinating busses to bring our class down to the Old Port.

Busses will depart at 7:00 pm from Chase Hall , with another one leaving at 9 that night for those who are unable to catch first bus. Busses will return at 1:00 in the morning. Bus tickets will be distributed in Commons on Monday, May 21st.

Tickets are $7 and must be paid by no later than that day during lunch.

Pub Crawl

Next week is officially senior week.  One of the events is the pub crawl.

The seniors will arrive at Page field at 3:30 pm and the crawl begins at 4:00 pm. Bring 4 $1 bills. The order will be;

1) Page Field

2) The Pub

3) The Goose

4) The Den

Once together, we will all make our way to the puddle. Furthermore, if the senior gift reaches 82% participation, President Cable will jump in the puddle along with the seniors!

Let’s reach that 82% and more importantly, let’s have fun!

First Class Performances

This past Wednesday, First Class Records (consisting of Sean Karr, Kid Flash, and myself) were scheduled to perform at Narals Restaurant as a part of the Bates Night In Town event.

There were about thirty performances all throughout the Lewiston/Auburn area. We performed at 7:30 pm; the last performers at the scheduled location. I opened up for Kid FLash. I performed two songs from my first mixtape The Next Up. I performed “Prince James” and “Ain’t No Telling.”

From my latest project, I performed “The Intermission II,” “Take Two,” “Nothin’ But A Number,” and finally “King James.” I also joined Kid Flash on stage to help him perform “Up For Air” and “It’s Cold.”

We also performed the same set for Friday’s Village Fest, which was held at 280 Underground. We were picking up steam by releasing music, but these performances helped give us face value and interactions with our supporters.

Amandla! Retreat

Yesterday was a monumental day for Amandla!, the multicultural student organization that focuses on the African Diaspora. As a reward to the members of a strenuous year, co-chairs Eunice Anderson and Destany Franklin treated the members to a trip at Old Orchard Beach.

The group had breakfast in Commons at 10:00 in the morning and by 10:45, everyone walked to the van and departed south towards the beach. Once we arrived, we decided to go to the movies. Most of us saw “The Avengers.”

We arrived to the actual beach at around 3:30 pm and from there, many of us played around in the water, but tried our best not to get ourselves incredible soaked. We discussed plans and suggestions for the leadership and activities for the following year. We walked on the boardwalk and window shopped. We initially wanted the rides, but they did not open until Memorial Day weekend. Even then, we did not allow that to damper our fun. Around dinner time, we went to the “Lost Golden Bear” and the food was incredible.  We arrived back to campus around 11 that evening. The night on campus pretty much died down by midnight. Nevertheless, a day’s worth of fun and insight made up for a lost day on campus.

The Breakthrough

One of the best things about Bates is the talent that spreads around campus. One of these talents includes music and along with seniors Shashi Shankar and Cameron Hamilton, they have taken the initiative in making music and promoting it to the students on campus. My mixtape,The Breakthroughis slated for a May 20th release. I have spawned the singles “King James” and “The Intermission II.”

The next single will be a song titled “Nothin’ But A Number” and it features an Aaliyah sample. The song discusses my love for Hip-Hop music.

To listen to either song on YouTube, just type in “Jimmy Watts King James” or “Jimmy Watts The Intermission II.” The mixtape is due out for release in two weeks and you can expect honest storytelling throughout. Bates College has aligned three students together to make good music!

 

Fireworks!!!

Thanks to Sangai Asia, they are hosting its annual fireworks show tonight!

On May 6th from 7:30-9:30 pm in the Amphitheater, the campus can witness this anticipated event.

The fireworks will begin at 9:00 pm, but come a little earlier to hear the Flu Fighters. This is a night you don’t want to miss!

Working Hours

For Bates College students (mainly seniors) who are not taking a short-term class or helping a professor with research, you must work for the school as means to stay on campus.

 

You are allowed to work no more than twenty hours per week. If you still haven’t gotten a job yet, make sure you contact your employers and set up a schedule as soon as possible.  Why not make money during short-term? Good weather, free time, and money. There’s nothing like it.

Rave Against The Machine

Last night was the WRBC sponsored party in the Benjamin Mays Center. I must say, it was the first rave I have ever attended and it sure did not disappoint. Fist pump music, bright lights, and endless glow sticks traveled around the Mays Center all through the night. At one point, the party was packed and security would not even allow me to enter until someone had left the party for good.

The music was provided by Autoerotique. DJ Society’s own Papi Chulo was scheduled to deejay, but he did not work for unknown reasons.

Although the rave wasn’t my kind of party, it definitely was a new experience. The atmosphere was very live and everyone had a good time. If this party is any indication of what to expect from short-term, then we are in for an exciting term!

 

Short Term Expectations

Short Term is finally here and that means at least five weeks worth of blogging. This means that I will talk about the upcoming parties, school activities, possible concerts, my mixtape process, and much more.

One thing that should be very interesting is a recap on the NBA 2K12 Tournament that will be held during short term. The grand prize is crowning yourself as the very best NBA 2K player on Bates College campus. I will provide you with updates, standings, wins, losses, and the eventual tournament winner. This should be interesting.

One thing I can say for sure is that short term will be legendary and I will be here to post the best moments.

The Aftermath

Well finals week is officially over. Hopefully everyone has done well, seniors turned in thesis, students are preparing for April break (or summer break for others).
